Left ventricular outflow tract velocity time integral (LVOT VTI) is a measure of cardiac systolic function and cardiac output. The NASCET technique is currently the standard on which the large clinical North American studies were based and should be used to make clinical decisions about which patients undergo CEA. NB: If the stenosis is short, there can be a return to triphasic flow dependant on the ingoing flow and quality of the vessels. Fulfilling the precise and rigorous methodology presented above, the rate of patients with discordant grading is still between 20% and 30%, thus representing a common clinical problem.
